Bully Buhlan (born February 3, 1924 as Hans-Joachim Buhlan in Berlin-Lichterfelde ; † November 7, 1982 in Berlin-Zehlendorf ) was a German jazz and pop singer , pianist , pop composer and actor , who was mainly in the post-war period and early the 1950s celebrated great success.
Artistic career
Buhlan began studying law during World War II , which he later dropped out. He also worked as a pianist and performed his swing performances in well-known restaurants such as the Groschenkeller and Café Leon. In 1945, the orchestra leader at the time, Michael Jary , brought him to the newly founded Radio Berlin Dance Orchestra . When Jary realized that Buhlan also had singing qualities, he made him the front singer of the orchestra.
When the new Amiga record company was founded in Berlin in 1947 , Bully Buhlan was one of the first performers with whom records were produced. One of his best-known Amiga titles is the Chattanooga Choo Choo , which he recorded together with Peter Parthuhn . After eight published singles , Buhlan left the Amiga, which was controlled by the Soviet occupation forces, and switched to the Odeon record company in West Berlin in 1948 , where three singles were produced, including the title Give me a kiss over the phone . This was followed by three more singles at Telefunken in 1949 . In the same year, Germany's largest record company, Polydor, signed a long-term contract with the Berlin singer. In the first few years he wrote the songs typical for Buhlan I'm so used to you or Ham'se nich''ne bride for me . When the first music charts were published in Germany in late 1953 , Buhlan was one of the performers rated early on. With the title Angelika he was listed at number 21 in the spring of 1954. Previously, he also had a success in the film industry when he got one of the leading roles in the 1953 film The Singing Hotel . In total, Bully Buhlan appeared in more than 30 cinema and television productions.
In the record business, Polydor provided him with the singer Rita Paul as a duet partner for several records , with whom he sang four records. Another duet partner was Mona Baptiste , their joint song Es lies was in der Luft reached number two in the machine market charts in 1954 - the greatest record success for Buhlan, which was in the hit lists five times by 1956. He made himself particularly popular with the Berlin audience with his Berlin-related songs, such as B. I still have a suitcase in Berlin (1951), Yes the Kurfürstendamm (1961) or Das Lied von der Krummen Lanke (1961). In the 1960s Buhlan worked several times with the West Berlin radio station RIAS together, who also produced his multiple vocal tracks, but not immediately, for on records released (. B. Drivers who drank at Kurfürstendamm his coffee , is on my account the comma too far left ).
At that time, Buhlan's popularity outside Berlin had already declined and his record sales were stagnating. As early as 1962, Polydor had lost interest in the almost 40-year-old, who no longer attracted young audiences. A short interlude with the record company Philips with only one record release ( Polly-Wolly-Holiday ) did not turn things around, afterwards no more records were produced with Buhlan. Only television gave him Germany-wide appearances until the early 1970s. When the oldie wave began to take off at the end of the decade, Bully Buhlan attempted a comeback. After his appearance in the television production A Little Happiness on All Paths (1980), he planned a tour through Germany with Bibi Johns and his former duet partner Mona Baptiste. His sudden death on November 7, 1982 after a heart attack broke his plans. He found his final resting place in the Dahlem forest cemetery in Berlin . His grave has been dedicated to the city of Berlin as an honorary grave since November 2018 .
