action

An organ grinder plays and sings along with it: “That was Berlin, the city of hard work and wit, where you could move forward like lightning. We'll show you five boys from this city, their ascent with music is unlikely to go smoothly. ”Director Petermann noticed the five musicians named Kurt Hellwig, Walter Schumann, Vicky Hanke, Paulchen Friese and Georg Weiler when they were playing at a horse show. He arranges an appointment for them in a small bar where they should audition. When asked if they have a singer, they resort to a white lie. Since they also have the question for a name no response, determines the bar owner that they now the band The fleet five were. Marion Peters, who introduces herself as a singer, inspires the men not only with her good looks, but also with her singing and so they ask the young woman to perform with them. They quickly play and sing their way to the top of all Berlin dance bands and have appearances after appearances. Because of Marion, Kurt Hellwig and Walter Schumann have an argument because they both fell in love with her. Your sponsor Petermann appeals to their common sense to get along again, because only together would they be successful. Marion and Kurt assure each other of their love and meet secretly without the other's knowledge. When Walter notices this after a while, he gets drunk before one of the most important appearances of the “Flotten Five”, but then makes a brilliant performance. However, he does not manage to come to terms with the fact that Marion and Kurt are a couple. Then the war breaks out and the young men of the band also receive draft orders .

And again the organ grinder plays and sings: “A lot has happened, the war is finally over, and everyone is building his new house out of rubble. But the six of us, the storm of time from their city of Berlin, spread them all over the world. ”Georg Weiler ended up in Hamburg, where he works as a doctor on an emergency room. In the dance hall Im Meeresgrund he looks for a change every now and then and is recognized by the singer Liselotte Malkowsky as one of the musicians of Flotten Fünf . He tells her that he doesn't know what happened to the others, only that Vicky Hanke was captured by Russia at the time. Shortly afterwards Vicky and Walter Schumann, who are both on their way to Berlin, meet again and indulge in memories. Kurt Hellwig, on the other hand, is in Vienna, but has just received his papers and also wants to return to Berlin. He is now in a relationship with Gretl Fiala, who shows a lot of understanding for him. The young woman senses that Kurt was never quite with her. She knows that he cannot forget Marion.

Marion, who had ended up in New York, where she was also married, could not stand there because of homesickness. She is just getting out of a plane that has brought her back to Berlin. Her mother now lives in the “Guter Wille” garden colony, she is told at the old address. Ms. Peters is now married to Otto Klemke, who was once very interested in Marion. She tells the mother that the divorce from her American husband, who understood that she had to go back home, went smoothly. Marion learns from her mother and Klemke that Paulchen now runs a sausage stand in Berlin, Vicky has often written from Russia, but that no one has heard from the other three.

Kurt has now also arrived in Berlin and is stopping at Paulchen's sausage stand, of all places. Both celebrate this extensively. Paulchen is enthusiastic and convinced that the "Flotte Five" can be resurrected. He tells Kurt that Georg Weiler became a doctor. No, he knew nothing about Vicky, just as little about Walter. But he knew from Marion's mother that she was happily married in America. And as luck would have it, shortly afterwards Georg, Vicky and Walter meet again and fall overjoyed in each other's arms. And as if that wasn't enough, they then also see Marion, who is led to the stage by the singer Bully Buhlan to sing a song from the “Flotten Fünf”. Little by little the men get involved in their own way. Kurt has now brought his girlfriend Gretl to Berlin. When his old number homesick for you rings out on the radio, Marion and Walter, who still has feelings for Marion, also hear the song. Director Petermann, who has re-established his contact with Kurt, has big plans for him and has already organized a performance for the Waldbühne, by then he must have his troop back together. When Marion and Walter want to ask the widow Zillman, where Kurt lived before the war, whether she knew anything about Kurt's fate, she met Gretl. The young woman approaches her in a friendly manner and tells Marion that Kurt never stopped loving her. Although Marion has doubts, Gretl is absolutely certain. Walter Schumann stands by and is deeply impressed by Gretl and her selfless behavior. And when Marion and Kurt meet again shortly afterwards, what Gretl already knew is confirmed. Walter, however, can persuade the unfortunate Gretl to stay in Berlin anyway and says why should the “Flotte Five” not become a “Flotte Seven”.

And the organ grinder informs us one last time: “Well, fate meant it well and reunited our friends back home. What she is experiencing can be seen here in the picture and I, the chronicler, can go one house further. ” A large poster is emblazoned on the Berlin advertising pillars , showing a performance by the band“ Die Flotten Fünf ”with the original line-up under the direction of Kurt Hellwig in the Waldbühne announces, with the singers Marion Peters, Gretl Fiala and Kläre Winter.

Der Spiegel wrote of his time at the premiere of nostalgia for you to Margot Hielscher's role: " 'In longing for you' she plays again a copy of German fidelity and honesty. Obviously, you won't get very far in Germany with sex appeal. [...] Anyone whohears herfaithfullyrecitethe song 'Look in my eyes' in 'Homesickness for You'will hardly believe that she was in The occasional midnight jam session put a 'hot' into the microphone that tore even die-hard jazz fans from their seats.
