Franz Friedrich Herbert Schroedter (born May 9, 1897 in Berlin , † November 14, 1968 in Hamburg ) was a German film architect , film company manager, documentary film director and producer.

Life

After attending the Luisengymnasium in his hometown of Berlin, the businessman's son had attended the building and arts and crafts school and shortly after completing his training in 1919, he joined Willi A. Herrmann as assistant to film (for Die Geächteten ). As early as the following year he began designing film structures independently, initially with decorations for secondary works.

Since 1925, Franz Schroedter worked closely with the production company of director Carl Froelich . It was a collaboration that spanned three dozen productions and would last until the outbreak of war in 1939. At the beginning of the sound film, Schroedter also designed the sets for several works by Richard Oswald . Schroedter was one of the busiest, but until then artistically, not very much demanded set designers in German film when he was brought in by Tobis for two prestigious large-scale productions, Friedrich Schiller - The Triumph of a Genius and Ohm Krüger .

In the same year Tobis management appointed him technical director of the company. Schroedter ended his career as an architect and moved up to the board. At the end of the war in 1945, Schroedter was initially unemployed, and it was not until 1949 that he was able to work again as a film architect. Until 1953 he devoted himself again to the design of film structures, after which he mainly worked as managing director and limited partner of his own company 'Franz Schroedter Studios', which concentrated on the production of (mostly short) documentaries. Franz Schroedter was also responsible as a director for these works.

Schroedter, who lived in Hamburg-Nienstedten after the war , had been married to the German-Spanish silent film star Esther Carena since the 1920s .
