The big break is a German silent film from 1927. Henny Porten plays the lead role under the direction of Carl Froelich .

action

Gabriele Amberg is a middle-aged violinist and meets the much younger Count Ottokar Torgstädt. He is fascinated by her femininity and art, she by his youth. In addition, she feels flattered to be coveted by the neat aristocrat. So they both get married abroad without Ottokar's class-conscious family at home noticing anything. Count Ottokar does not want to present Count and Countess Torgstädt with a fait accompli and presents Gabriele to them at home as his fiancée, his bride. For this reason, the couple first has to get a divorce to appear credible.

This “big break” in the marriage leads Gabriele to rethink. She states that she and her Ottokar don't really fit together, not to mention the class difference, which poses all kinds of problems. Since Ottokar's cousin, Komtess Ina Wildborn, also pokes at her ex-husband unrestrainedly, and Gabriele also thinks that the two are a perfect match, not only in terms of generation, she acts as a postillon d'amour and brings them together. But even the clever violinist does not stay alone for long, but finds a new marital happiness with her lawyer Boretius.

Production notes

The big break took place in May and June 1927 in the UFA Atelier in Berlin-Tempelhof , passed the film censorship on July 29, 1927 and was premiered on November 9, 1927. The film had six acts, spread over a length of 2372 meters. A youth ban has been issued.

The film structures come from Franz Schroedter , the costumes from Johanna Marbach. Porten's husband Wilhelm von Kaufmann was also responsible for production management.

criticism

Paimann's film lists summed up: "The age difference between the two spouses, which forms the basic motif of the subject, has come to the fore through the choice of a young partner for Henny Porten to such an extent that underneath it almost the harmony of the film, which, by the way, has a harmlessly appealing, Plot, rich in nice passages and continuously staged, suffers. Henny Porten is again excellent in terms of her community, presentation and photography clean. "
