Chauncey N. Olds

Chauncey N. Olds (born February 2, 1816 in Marlboro , Vermont , † February 11, 1890 in Columbus , Ohio ) was an American lawyer and politician . He was Attorney General of Ohio in 1865 . The Congressman Edson B. Olds was his brother. Olds belonged to the Republican Party .

Career

Chauncey N. Olds was born in Windham County about a year after the end of the British-American War . At the age of four, the family moved to Ohio and settled in Cuyahoga County . The family moved then 1830 Circleville ( Pickaway County ). In the fall of 1830 he began his studies at Ohio University , which he had to give up three years later due to illness. He then went to Miami University from 1834 , where he graduated in 1836. Then he worked there as a professor. In 1840 he gave up his position. He studied law and then began practicing law in Circleville in 1842 after receiving his license to practice law. His student days were overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 and the following years by the Mexican-American War . He practiced in the town until 1856. Between 1848 and 1849 he sat in the Ohio House of Representatives and between 1849 and 1850 in the Ohio Senate . During that time he was a member of the Whig Party . He later joined the Republican Party . In 1856 he moved to Columbus, Ohio. He then ran unsuccessfully for the office of Attorney General of Ohio in 1862. The Governor of Ohio John Brough appointed Olds as the new attorney general, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of the 20 February 1865 William P. Richardson was born. Olds did not run in the 1864 election. He served as a trustee of Miami University for 25 years . He was also a member of the Presbyterian Church . For the last 17 years of his life he represented the Pittsburg, Cincinnati and St. Louis Railway in Franklin County . He died on February 11, 1890 at his home in Columbus.
