William P. Richardson

William Pitt Richardson (born May 25, 1824 in Washington County , Pennsylvania , † August 4, 1886 in New Castle , Indiana ) was an American lawyer , officer and politician of the Republican Party . He was Attorney General of Ohio in 1865 .

Career

William Pitt Richardson's youth were overshadowed by the economic crisis of 1837 . He began attending Washington College in 1841 and graduated in 1844. He then worked as a teacher and remained so after moving to Ohio. He enlisted in 1846 as a private in the 3rd  Infantry Regiment of Ohio and served in the Mexican-American War . In 1852 he was elected Prosecuting Attorney of Monroe County - a post he held until 1861. During the Civil War he enlisted as a major in the Ohio 25th Infantry Regiment. Over time, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and then Colonel . On May 2, 1863, he took part in the Battle of Chancellorsville , where he was badly wounded and lost his right arm.

Richardson was elected Attorney General of Ohio in 1864. He held the office from January 9, 1865 until his resignation on February 20, 1865. Governor John Brough then appointed Chauncey N. Olds as Attorney General. In December 1864 Richardson received a promotion to brevet - Brigadier General . In the same year he was appointed commander of the Military Prison Camp at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio. He was later named the Collector of Internal Revenue for the 15th District of Ohio. He died on August 4, 1886 in New Castle, Indiana. His body was then transferred to Marietta, Ohio, where he was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery .

His granddaughter Rhea was the mother of the famous American film director John Huston and the grandmother of actors Anjelica Huston and Danny Huston .
