Richard Michael "Mike" DeWine (* 5. January 1947 in Springfield , Ohio ) is an American politician of the Republican Party , of the State of Ohio in both houses of Congress represented. He has been the governor of his home state since January 14, 2019 .

Life

DeWine studied at Miami University in Oxford , Ohio, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1969 . He then attended the College of Law at Ohio Northern University , where he received the Juris Doctor in 1972 . He was inducted into the Ohio Bar that same year and practiced in Xenia . From 1981 to 1982 DeWine was a member of the Ohio Senate .

When he was elected to Congress for Republicans, he moved to the US House of Representatives and represented his home state there from January 3, 1983 to January 3, 1991. His next political office was that of Lieutenant Governor of Ohio. After his election in the same he held the office from January 14, 1991 for four years until 1995; he was thus Deputy Governor George Voinovich . In 1994 DeWine was elected to the United States Senate. After serving as a Senator from 1995 to 2007, he was replaced by Democrat Sherrod Brown . He had previously beaten him on November 7, 2006 in the Senate election .

In November 2010 DeWine made a political comeback. He ran for Ohio State Attorney General and defeated the Democratic incumbent Richard Cordray with 48 to 46 percent of the vote, whereupon he was able to take his new post on January 10, 2011. In 2014 he was confirmed in office.

In the summer of 2016, DeWine announced that it would apply for the office of governor in 2018 to succeed his party colleague John Kasich , who was not allowed to run again after two terms due to a constitutional clause. He won his party's primary election in May 2018 and competed in the November main election with his running mate , former Secretary of State Jon A. Husted , against the Democrat Richard Cordray, whom he defeated in the 2010 Attorney General election. The choice was considered open. However, DeWine was able to prevail quite clearly against Cordray and was sworn in as governor of Ohio on January 14, 2019.

He and his wife Frances have eight children, one of whom died in a car accident in 1993.

Mike DeWine is not a categorical opponent of the death penalty. In 2019 he temporarily suspended the execution of the death penalty. In 2019, several prisoners were pardoned.

In April 2019, he approved a law that tightened abortion regulations.
