Thomas H. Ford

Thomas H. Ford (born August 23, 1814 in Rockingham County , Virginia , †  February 29, 1868 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1856 and 1858 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Ohio .

Career

After studying law and admission to the bar, Thomas Ford began practicing the profession in Richland County , Ohio. During the Mexican-American War he was a captain in the United States Army . Politically, he joined the Republican Party . In 1856, Ford was elected Lieutenant Governor of Ohio alongside Salmon P. Chase . He held this office between 1856 and 1859. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate .

After his time as Vice Governor, Ford became head of the Federal Printing Office. During the Civil War he was a colonel in the Ohio State Militia infantry unit that was part of the Union Army . In 1862 he was tried by court martial for military disobedience and expelled from the army. He then practiced as a lawyer in Washington. He died there on February 29, 1868.
