history
The place was mentioned in 1257 as Kegenswile . In the middle of the 13th century the area was part of the Habsburg family , in the early 14th century it belonged to the Engelberg estate and in the 15th century it became the property of the Beromünster Abbey and the Lucerne magistrate family Gundoldingen .
The Bartholomäus chapel was enlarged in 1455 and consecrated in 1459, after a fire in 1800 it was rebuilt. In 1665 the chaplaincy benefice was created in Kägiswil . Since then, services have been celebrated in the Bartholomäus chapel and another chapel. The Bartholomäus chapel was demolished and the modern Church of the Assumption of Mary and a parish center were built on the same site from 1966 . The church was consecrated on September 14, 1968, and in 1971 Kägiswil became a parish.
In the 14th and 15th centuries, the Teilame Kägiswil gained in importance, a corporation that administered the common property (Bürgergut). In 1879 the district community was founded, where the Teiler (corporation citizens) and Beisassen (settled people) came together. The district communities independently regulated the areas of building police, roads, sewerage, lighting, water supply and garbage disposal. On January 1, 2004, the Sarnen district communities were dissolved and merged to form the entire community of Sarnen.

Attractions
Since 1954, the St. Niklaus entry into Kägiswil has taken place annually on the Saturday before the 1st Advent. In doing so, St. Niklaus solemnly enters the village, accompanied by numerous groups of drinkers and over 70 colorful Infuln (pronounced "Iffele"). With around 1500 participants, it is one of the largest and best-known Niklaus entrances in Central Switzerland.
The Dunschtigchäppeli (Thursday chapel) is on the Kägiswiler Allmend between Kägiswil and the Wichelsee . It was built in 1779 after a major cattle epidemic, 60 head of cattle fell ill with lung and spleen disease in the summer. The Kägiswilers had vowed to build a chapel if the misfortune stopped. Tradition has it that the last head of cattle died of the disease on a Thursday, and the chapel was built and that is how it got its name. Another explanation of the name says that prayers were held in the chapel on Thursdays. The chapel was renovated in 1987/88. In the chapel, the oldest statue of the Virgin Mary known in Sarnen with baby Jesus from around 1330 was rediscovered. The original is on loan at the Historisches Museum Obwalden in Sarnen, and a copy is in the chapel.

The largest of these is Leister Technologies , a manufacturer of hot air and plastic welding equipment. The company was founded in Solingen in 1949 and has been in Kägiswil since 1963.
