The Obwalden Historical Museum in the former Sarnen barracks

The former Sarnen barracks at Brünigstrasse 127 in Sarnen has housed the Obwalden Historical Museum since 1928 . The building itself is classified as worthy of cantonal protection and is a listed building as a B object.

History of the building

The building was erected around 1599 as an armory and barracks, on the lower plain of the river. The builder was Peter Winmann, then owner of the mill in Schoried near Alpnach . In 1711 the function of the armory was withdrawn from the building and it was only used as a barracks. On June 16, 1855, it was decided to carry out the increase and expansion proposed by the sack master, architectural draftsman and doctor Simon Etlin. This expansion work began on April 1, 1856 and could be completed in December of the same year. The barracks were advertised for sale in the official gazette on September 22, 1925, but no buyer was found. On June 4, 1927, the Cantonal Council decided to convert the building into a museum and canton library. As a result, between 1927 and 1928, the interior was adapted to the new requirements under the direction of Niklaus Ettlin from Kerns.

Historical Museum Obwalden

The Historical Society of Obwalden, founded in 1877, has housed its collection of local art and cultural assets in the building since 1928. This museum collection is classified as worthy of protection by the canton and is listed as a B object in the list of cultural assets of the Federal Office for Civil Protection.

In 1970, as part of a renovation, a waiting apartment was installed in the attic. This apartment was used again in 2007 for the needs of the museum. In 1980 the cantonal library on the 2nd floor moved to the Grundacherhaus in Sarnen. Since 2006, the former cannon cellar, also known as the weapons hall, has been used by the museum for temporary exhibitions and events. In autumn 2008, the outer shell of the building was renovated and soundproof windows were installed at the same time.
