In addition to its function as a public library , the Obwalden Cantonal Library is responsible for collecting, storing and making accessible regional literature from Obwalden. This includes a large collection on Brother Klaus (Niklaus von Flüe, 1417–1487). The canton library was founded in 1895. It has been in the Grundacherhaus in Sarnen since 1980 .
Inventory and use
In addition to entertainment literature, the cantonal library has a wide range of non-fiction, which is supplemented by films, CD-ROMs, DVDs, audio books, comics, magazines and newspapers. The total amount is about 60,000, of which 25,000 are in the hands-free unit . The cantonal library is affiliated with the DiBiZentral network for e-media . Many of the media in the archive cannot be borrowed, but can be viewed in the reading room of the cantonal library.
The Obwalden Cantonal Library is open to everyone. A library card is required for borrowing, which must be presented at every borrowing process. A copier and internet access are available.
The canton library has an important historical book inventory.
