The Obwalden Cantonal Library is now located in the Grundacher.

The Grundacherhaus in Sarnen in the canton of Obwalden in Switzerland is a residential building from 1593. It was originally built as a simple farmhouse and later converted into a manorial residence. The Obwalden Cantonal Library, founded in 1895, has been housed in the Grundacherhaus since 1980. The building is classified as a nationally significant cultural asset and is a listed building as an A property.

History of the building

The property was first mentioned in a document in 1571. The governor Marquard Imfeld then built a simple, high-gabled farmhouse with an attic in 1593. The well-preserved paneled room on the first floor of the main house dates from around 1670 . This Grundacherstube is equipped with a Lucerne tiled stove decorated with blue tendrils and received a buffet decorated with inlays around 1740 .

The next owner, Landammann Just Ignaz Imfeld , transformed the house into a manorial residence. The granary became an adjoining house and both houses were connected by a flying buttress . Therefore, the house is now also known as the Grundacher semi-detached house . The new ballroom in the former warehouse was decorated with magnificent ceiling stucco , which has been preserved to this day.

Todays use

After an eventful history with several changes of ownership, the municipality of Sarnen finally acquired the property in 1962. After extensive restorations, the Obwalden Cantonal Library moved into the building in 1980 .

The interior of the house has the character of an elegant mansion to this day. The richly stuccoed ballroom now serves as a reading room. The small garden is laid out as a baroque garden.
