The Landammann (of Land and Amtmann ) is a Swiss official designation.
In some Swiss cantons the chairman of the cantonal government is named Landammann, namely in Uri , Schwyz , Nidwalden and Obwalden , Zug , Glarus , Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Innerrhoden , Solothurn and Aargau . Landammann is also the official title of the mayor of Davos . The usual female name is Frau Landammann .
Originally the Landammann (or Ammann ) was the elected judge and the head of the rural community of a self-governing region. The term existed in this form since the High Middle Ages , when it replaced the court official appointed by the authorities. The designation and function of Landammann was also common in Vorarlberg and Liechtenstein .
During the Helvetic Republic , the head of government of the centralized Helvetic Republic was 1802 Landammann called, and the restored confederation of mediation time officiated a country Ammann of Switzerland , representing the federal power over the cantons.
