The Wichelsee is a lake in central Switzerland in the canton of Obwalden . It extends in a south-west-north-east direction and hugs a rock face on its south-east bank. It is approximately 1.8 km long and has a maximum width of 170 m. The lake is located near the villages of Alpnach and Kägiswil in the area of the municipalities of Alpnach and Sarnen .
use
The lake was created in 1955 when a dam was built. Most of the outflowing water is conducted in a 1,860 m long pressure tunnel with a net gradient of 23 m to the Eichi low-pressure run-of-river power plant , which is operated by the Sarneraa AG power plant in Alpnach. With two vertical 1.2 MW Kaplan turbines, the power plant produces an average of 13.9 million kWh per year. 30% of the power plant belongs to the canton of Obwalden. The municipalities of Alpnach and Sarnen each have a 26% share and Centralschweizerische Kraftwerke AG has an 18% share. The latter also operates the power plant.
nature
The lake and the surrounding area have been under nature protection since 2005. In 2007 a bypass water was built into the dam so that the dam can be flooded in the event of flooding. A fish pass ( fish pass ) was also built into this residual water section, as the weir is on the natural migration route of the fish.
The lake and the adjacent floodplain forest are a playground and breeding ground for a multitude of different bird species such as eagle owls, tufted ducks and a colony of swans. Therefore and also because of its location, the Wichelsee is a decidedly recreational area. Because of the rock wall in the background that rises to the core forest, the lake is a suitable photo motif.
The Wichelsee was also affected by the severe storm in August 2005 . Driftwood accumulated at the weir and the water masses destroyed a road and a footbridge below the weir.
