The airfield Kägiswil ( ICAO code LSPG ) is an airfield in Kägiswil , a district of Sarnen in the canton of Obwalden in Switzerland . It is a former airfield of the Swiss Air Force . The Kägiswil airfield is located north of Sarnen and has a hard surface runway over 900 meters long. The planes are parked in a large wooden hangar and in the grass-covered shelters built by the military.

history

The Kägiswil airfield was built by the Swiss Army in 1943 and was used for civilian purposes from 1956. In 1995 the army still operated eight U-43 aircraft shelters for the light flier squadrons with Alouette II and Alouette III . In 1996 the field was retired as a military airfield.

The canton of Obwalden had plans to buy the airfield from Armasuisse and to convert most of it into agricultural land. Flight operations should cease by the end of 2016.

In order to maintain the airfield, the association Pro Flugplatz Kägiswil was founded in December 2012.

The loan required for the purchase was rejected by Obwalden voters in the referendum of March 3, 2013 with 62.42% no votes.
