William Gillespie Pickrel (born February 1, 1888 in Jackson , Jackson County , Ohio , †  March 7, 1966 in Dayton , Ohio) was an American politician . In 1928 and from 1931 to 1933 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Ohio.

Career

William Pickrel attended public schools in his home country. In 1910 he graduated from Miami University in Oxford . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Cincinnati and his admission to the bar in 1912, he began to work in Dayton in this profession. Soon he became a respected citizen of his hometown and a member and president of the local and state-wide bar associations. He was also a director at the Dayton Chamber of Commerce.

Politically, Pickrel joined the Democratic Party . In 1920 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives . After the resignation of Lieutenant Governor Earl D. Bloom , he was appointed by Governor A. Victor Donahey as his successor in the second highest office of the state. He held this position between April and November 1928. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . The term of office would not officially have ended until January 14, 1929. It is unclear why he gave up the post in November 1928. He was then succeeded by George C. Braden , who ended his term in office until January 1929. He had failed in his party in the primaries for the office of lieutenant governor that year.

In 1930 Pickrel was re-elected to this office, which he held between 1931 and 1933 under Governor George White . In 1932 he originally wanted to run for office again and was also nominated by his party. But he changed his mind and withdrew his application. In 1934 he failed in his party's gubernatorial election. In 1944 he ran against Robert A. Taft for a seat in the US Senate . He was conceivably just under with 49.7% against 50.3% of the vote. After that, he no longer appeared politically. He died in Dayton on March 7, 1966.
