James Myers

James Myers (born June 1795 in Dutchess County , New York , †  July 19, 1864 in Toledo , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1854 and 1856 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Ohio.

Career

James Myers grew up in Schenectady . He later took part in the British-American War of 1812 . After the war he worked in agriculture and trade. From the mid-1820s to 1836 he was in charge of the Erie Canal in Schenectady . From 1836 he lived in Toledo, where he was involved in the construction of the Miamikananal . He then worked in the real estate industry. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1843 and 1844 he served as mayor of Toledo. He was a member of the Ohio Senate from 1848 to 1852 .

In 1854, Myers was elected lieutenant governor of Ohio alongside William Medill . He held this office between 1856 and 1856. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . All Ohio lieutenant governors held this position until 1979, when this practice was abolished by a reform of the state constitution. Despite his deteriorating health, Myers was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1862 to 1864 . His legislative term ended on January 3, 1864. He died a little over seven months later on July 19 of the same year.
