HW Curtiss

Harvey Willard "HW" Curtiss (born February 22, 1824 in Portage County , Ohio , †  April 30, 1902 in Chagrin Falls , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1878 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Ohio.

Career

HW Curtiss graduated from the Grand River Institute in Ohio. After a subsequent medical degree and his approval as a doctor, he began to work in this profession. He practiced first in Pittsburgh and then in Chagrin Falls. Curtiss was an opponent of slavery . Before the Civil War, his house was a stop for the Underground Railroad , which helped escaped slaves from the south to flee. He joined the Republican Party, founded in 1854, and became a member of the Chagrin Falls parish council. Between 1861 and 1865 he held the office of mayor there. Between 1870 and 1874 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives ; from 1874 to 1880 he was a member of the State Senate . He was a member of several committees in both chambers. In 1877 he was President Pro Tempore, acting President of the State Senate.

In November 1876, Governor Rutherford B. Hayes was elected President of the United States . He took up his new office on March 4, 1877. Two days earlier he was succeeded by Lieutenant Governor Thomas L. Young in the highest office in Ohio. In accordance with the state constitution, the President Pro Tempore of the State Senate, H. W. Curtiss, became the new lieutenant governor. He held this office between March 2, 1877 and January 14, 1878. He was Deputy Governor and formally Chairman of the Senate. After serving as Lieutenant Governor, Curtiss worked as a doctor until a few years before his death. He died on April 30, 1902 in Chagrin Falls, where he was also buried.
