Paul Leonard (politician)

Paul R. Leonard (born July 3, 1943 in Dayton , Ohio ) is an American politician . Between 1987 and 1991 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Ohio.

Career

Paul Leonard studied journalism at Ohio University until 1965 . After a subsequent law degree at Northern Kentucky University and his admission to the bar in 1969, he began to work in this profession. He has always been committed to animal welfare and, as a lawyer, has also represented cases relating to this topic, among other things. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1973 and 1980 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives ; from 1982 to 1986 he was the successor to James H. McGee mayor of his hometown Dayton. He was especially popular with the youth. He appeared in television commercials and played the electric guitar.

In 1986, Leonard was elected Lieutenant Governor of Ohio alongside Dick Celeste . He held this office between 1987 and 1991. He was Deputy Governor . After serving as Lieutenant Governor, he practiced again as a lawyer in Dayton. He founded the Center for Animal Law and Advocacy , an organization that advocates tougher punishment for animal abuse. Today he is a director at the Animal Legal Defense Fund . In addition to his work as a lawyer and in animal welfare, Leonard also holds lectures in political science at various universities.
