John William Brown

John William Brown (born December 28, 1913 in Athens , Ohio , †  October 29, 1993 in Medina , Ohio) was an American politician and in 1957 the 58th  governor of the state of Ohio.

Early years and political advancement

Brown attended Lancaster High School until 1932 . Since November 1941 he was based in Medina. He was a member of the Ohio Highway Police; in World War II he served in the US Coast Guard . After the war he worked in various business fields. For example, he was involved in real estate, retail and insurance.

Between 1950 and 1953, Brown was mayor of his hometown Medina. In 1952 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Ohio. In 1956 he applied unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for the upcoming gubernatorial elections.

Governor of ohio

On January 3, 1957, incumbent Governor Frank J. Lausche , a Democrat , resigned from office to serve in the US Senate . John Brown, who was still lieutenant governor, had to end his remaining term as governor until January 14, 1957. In those eleven days, as governor, he couldn't achieve much. But he demanded more money for education policy and advocated the preservation of the state's natural resources. He also mediated a strike against a telephone company.

Further political career

After his brief tenure as governor ended, he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1959 and 1960 . Between 1963 and 1975 he was again lieutenant governor of his state. In 1974, his attempt to be re-elected to this office failed. He was also president of an insurance company and commander in chief of the military and naval departments of the Ohio National Guard ( Ohio Military and Naval Forces ). John Brown died in 1993. He was married to Violet A. Helman, with whom he had a daughter.
