history
The city was founded in 1800 by Ebenezer Zane (1747–1811), who laid the road ("Zane's Trace") through the Northwest Territory , and in return received lands at three river crossings on his road: on the Muskingum River , on the Hocking River , and on the Scioto River . From the land on the Hocking River, New Lancaster was renamed Lancaster in 1805. As early as 1806 Lancaster was the seat of the county administration, in 1809 the first newspaper appeared, the Lancaster Eagle Gazette. Since the majority of the settlers were of German origin, the newspaper appeared in German, and school lessons were also held in German. The first economic boom occurred in 1836 when the Lancaster Lateral Canal was connected to the Ohio-Erie Canal .
