The Hocking River is a 164 km long river in the southeastern US state of Ohio .
It drains into the Gulf of Mexico via the Ohio River and Mississippi River . The Hocking River is part of the river system of the Mississippi River and drains an area of 3,100 square kilometers. The river has its source in Bloom Township in Fairfield County , flows generally in a southeast direction through the counties of Fairfield, Hocking and Athens and flows into the Ohio River at Hockingport . 62% of the catchment area consists of forest, followed by arable land and pastures with 27%, while around 10% is built on.
The name is Delaware , spoken by the Lenni Lenape . Squat means bottle gourd and ing place. This name refers to the shape of the river near what is now Logan . Until the late 19th century, the river was called the Hockhocking River . According to the Geographic Names Information System , the river was also referred to as Great Hock-hocking River, Hockhocken River, Hocking Hocking River, Hakhakkien River and similar spellings in its settlement history.
The Hocking Canal used to connect the cities of Athens and Lancaster with the Ohio-Erie Canal , but was destroyed by the floods and not restored. Because of the flood danger to the campus of Ohio University 's renewed around 1970 US Army Corps of Engineers a section of the former channel at Athens. The Hockhocking Adena Bikeway was built on a former railway line between Nelsonville and Athens . This is a 29 km long bike path that is mainly used by students for leisure activities.
