history
Logan was founded in 1816 on the initiative of former Ohio Governor Thomas Worthington . Worthington had bought the land near the Hocking Falls waterfall for $ 1,000 and built two mills . In 1818 Logan became the seat of County Hocking. As a result, the place developed mainly through the construction of traffic routes and the exploitation of raw material deposits. In 1840 the Hocking Canal reached the place that connected Logan with Athens , Lancaster and the Ohio-Erie Canal . In 1869 the Hocking Valley Railway reached the place. Coal was mined in the Hocking Valley in the 19th century , but mining came to a standstill around Logan after the New Straitsville coal seam fell victim to a coal fire . Natural gas was discovered at the end of the 19th century, but the deposits were exhausted after a few years. The city took off again in 1907 when the Hocking Valley Railway repair shop opened there. After the factory closed in 1930, the city went downhill again, compounded by the effects of the Great Depression .
