The son of the history painter and sculptor Johann Peter Götting and Anna Margarethe Prehel came to Aachen after studying sculpture at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and then doing various commissioning activities between 1860 and 1870, where he set up a workshop in Jakobstrasse there. In the years 1870–1872 Götting was appointed professor for bossing at RWTH Aachen University. One of his most famous students at that time was Lambert Piedboeuf , but also Johann Lorenz Opree . Götting's Düsseldorf classmate was Wilhelm Busch . Both characterize in their works, one with the pen, the other with the chisel.

In his work, Götting saw himself as a representative of neo-Gothic against the background of the so-called Kulturkampf , which began in the 1870s . One of his main works was undoubtedly the 90 stone sculptures on Aachen Cathedral , most of which were carved from Savonnières limestone and only a few from Udelfang sandstone . He was modeled on the sculptures at Cologne Cathedral , which at that time was the center of neo-Gothic, although he worked his Aachen sculptures more delicately. He was just as meticulous with his other works. Götting was largely advised and supported by the Aachen canon and art historian Franz Bock , who also brokered numerous other important work assignments for him, as well as by his colleague and also well-known sculptor Gustav Angelo Venth (1848–1903), son of the painter Aloys Hubert Michael Venth .
