Johann Peter Götting

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Peter Götting , also known as Godding (* 1795 in Aachen ; † October 3, 1855 in Düsseldorf ), was a German history painter and sculptor of the Romantic period .

Life

Götting received his first painting and drawing lessons as well as instruction in modeling from Johann Baptist Joseph Bastiné in the Aachen drawing school . However, painting was to remain his main activity, as he had stated in his marriage certificate of October 27, 1820. A few years later, Götting switched to the Düsseldorf Art Academy , where from 1829 he exhibited a Mater dolorosa in clay as well as Aeneas and Anchises as a bas-relief made of plaster, but from 1832 appeared with paintings. He was instructed by Wilhelm Schadow mainly in the art of history painting. Influenced by Schadow himself, but also by contacts with the group of artists formed around Schadow, the Düsseldorf School of Painting , Götting oriented himself towards the Nazarene art direction when choosing his motifs . The paintings he created during this time were often mentioned in connection with the works of Ernst Deger , Andreas Müller , Karl Müller , Franz Ittenbach . Some of his works of art were included in the catalog " Histoire de l'art moderne Allemagne " by the art collector Atanazy Raczyński . After a successful debut at the painting exhibition in Aachen in 1837, Götting's paintings were represented several times at the Berlin art exhibition from 1834 to 1844 and at the painting exhibitions of the Kunstverein zu Bremen in 1843 and 1845 .

Bust of Robert Schumann by Johann Peter Götting, 1853

In between, Götting was also active as a sculptor, but apart from a 48 centimeter high bust of Robert Schumann , hardly any other works of this kind have come down to us. This bust is the only fully three-dimensional portrait of Robert Schumann that is known or has survived and is now on permanent loan to the Heinrich Heine Institute in Düsseldorf .

family

Johann Peter Götting was initially married to Anna Katharina Franck from Aachen and in 1829 in Düsseldorf to Anna Margarethe Prehel. With her he had the son Gottfried Götting , who moved back to Aachen after the death of his father, where he became a successful and well-known sculptor and was given a teaching position at the Royal Rheinisch-Westfälische Polytechnische Schule in Aachen . A third marriage followed later with a person whose name was not known.

In some sources, such as Nagler's artist lexicon, Götting is mentioned with a “von”, which, according to J. Fey, is not proven and therefore not tenable.
