Andreas Müller (painter, 1811)
Andreas Johann Jakob Heinrich Müller (born February 19, 1811 in Kassel ; † March 29, 1890 in Düsseldorf ) was a German church and history painter from the Düsseldorf School .
Life
Andreas Müller was the son of the court painter Franz Hubert Müller and was born on February 19, 1811 in Hessen-Kassel. His younger brother was the painter Karl Müller . Andreas Müller graduated from high school in Darmstadt. His father worked there as a gallery director. His father, whom he supported in his work, taught him his first knowledge of painting for four years, after which Müller moved to the Academy in Munich in 1833, where he learned from Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld and Peter von Cornelius . In order to deepen his knowledge of oil painting , he switched to the Düsseldorf Art Academy run by Schadow the following year . One of his teachers there was C. Sohn , who created the oil painting “Der Knab vom Berg”, which is attributed to the romantic genre, based on a poem by Uhland . Influenced by his acquaintance with Ernst Deger , Müller turned again to the painting of religious images, which was already practiced in Munich. His next painting, “Three Singing Angels” (1836) was bought by Adolph Friedrich, 1st Duke of Cambridge , in Hanover. The third painting, “A reading monk in a monastery courtyard”, was bought in 1837 by the Art Association for the Rhineland and Westphalia .
This enabled him to travel to Italy with Deger in the fall of 1837 , where he joined the Nazarenes ' association of artists in Rome and continued his studies. In the early summer of 1840 he married Maria Katharina, b. Sweden. After two more years in Rome, he returned to Düsseldorf with his wife and eldest son Joseph Maria Wilhelm (born March 31, 1841 in Rome).
He received the order from the Count of Fürstenberg-Stammheim to paint the St. Apollinari church near Remagen together with Deger, Ittenbach and his brother Karl . He worked on this assignment from 1843 to 1851. The colors he developed were used with boiled oil, the work was under his direction. Wiegmann counts these paintings "among the most sublime and perfect that have been created in the field of church art for centuries". His part of the assignment was to depict the life of St. Apollinaris on the four large wall surfaces on the east and west sides of the transept. There he also created a series of pictures of the family saints of the Fürstenberg family as well as the ideal figures of St. Cecilia and the royal singer David above the organ stage.
In 1855, after Mosler's retirement , he was appointed professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where he was a drawing teacher in the elementary class, curator of the art collections and teacher of art history. In the fire of the academy on the night of March 19-20, 1872 , several of his works, including an almost completed altarpiece of St. Joseph and many portfolios with studies, were destroyed. He then finished the altarpiece again by 1877. Another altarpiece depicting the Mother of God and saints was painted for the parish church in Lank on behalf of Countess Czerklas. In addition: in 1867 a life-size saint "Barbara", painted on behalf of the Prince Bishop Förster von Breslau, and the two altarpieces (Rosary, Joseph) for the church in Zyfflich on the Dutch border. On behalf of the Prince of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg , a reliquary was created that depicts the passion of Christ in the shape of a cross. A later execution on a larger scale was taken over by the Nationalgalerie Berlin .
Teaching at the academy took up a large part of his time, for the art collections he wrote the work “A copperplate engraving by Rafael in the collection of the Royal Art Academy in Düsseldorf, described by the conservator of this collection, Andreas Müller, history painter and royal professor. Düsseldorf, Buddäus 1860 " . In the 1860s, Prince Karl Anton von Hohenzollern commissioned him to decorate the art hall of the princely castle in Sigmaringen , where 24 depictions by German masters were created in collaboration with his son Franz . He restored several old pictures for Prince Adolf von Schaumburg-Lippe , including the restoration of the painting “Assumption of Mary” by Peter Paul Rubens, which was located in Düsseldorf at the time, as particularly successful. He could no longer fully complete the restoration of the castle chapel in Bückeburg . In 1881 he suffered a stroke that paralyzed and deprived him of language until his death. He died on March 29, 1890.
As a graphic artist, Müller also produced ornamental works for book design. He was awarded numerous medals and was a member of the academies in Vienna, Amsterdam and Lisbon.
