Church painter is the usual term for the profession of painter and varnisher specializing in church painting and monument preservation and is an official job title in Germany.

This professional specialization was introduced nationwide on August 1, 2003 with the reorganization of the training and master craftsman examination regulations. Previously, the training was only possible in the federal states of Bavaria and Saxony. In the imperial era , church painting was part of the professional profile in decorative painting .

School-based vocational training can take place at various technical schools, with the focus on training in the third year of training. The master’s examination and a one-year preparatory course can be taken at the Munich Municipal Master’s School for Gilders and Church Painters, the only master’s school of its kind in Germany, Western Austria and Switzerland. Church painters are also active in the field of restoration .
