Primorsk ( Russian Приморск , Finnish Koivisto , Swedish Björkö ) is a Russian coastal city with 6119 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). It is located on the northern coast of the Gulf of Finland , 140 km west of Saint Petersburg and belongs to the Vyborg Rajon of Leningrad Oblast .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1268 in a Russian chronicle under the name Берёзовское (Berjosowskoje, "Birkendorf"). Sweden conquered the region during the third Swedish crusade under Torgils Knutsson , and in the Peace of Nystad it fell to Russia. From 1920 to 1940 she was part of the now independent Finland as a Koivisto . In the Continuation War the place was occupied by Finnish troops 1941-1944.

In July 1905, shortly after the sea battle of Tsushima , which was decisive in the Russo-Japanese War , Kaiser Wilhelm II and Tsar Nicholas II met here to pursue European alliance policy with a personal treaty from Björkö . Kaiser Wilhelm II wanted to avert the "encirclement" of Germany by the Russian-French alliance. But the attempt on its own failed.

In the 20th century the city developed into the outer port of Vyborg .

The port of Primorsk

The largest oil loading port in the Baltic Sea is located in Primorsk. Primorsk has been the western end point of the Baltic pipeline system since 2001 . Four oil tankers can be loaded at the same time in the port of Primorsk. In view of the dispute with Belarus over oil transit to Western Europe, this port is gaining in importance.

Opposite the port of Primorsk is the bird sanctuary "Berjosowyje Ostrowa", the Birch Islands , which falls under the Ramsar Convention .
