It is located on the left bank of the river Svir , around 285 km northeast of Saint Petersburg . The closest towns are Lodeinoye Pole (39 km southwest of Podporozhye) and Olonez (65 km west).
history
The place was created in 1936 as part of the construction of a hydroelectric power station on the Swir. The name Posporoschje literally means “by the rapids ” and refers to the local section of the river. The name was still used in the 19th century for the area near today's Podporoschje, in which there were special settlements with workers who were responsible for the smooth shipping in this area.
The hydropower plant was commissioned in 1951 after delays caused by the war under the name Oberswir hydropower plant (Верхнесвирская ГЭС). Due to the rapid influx of construction workers and later employees of the new power plant, the population of the town exceeded 10,000 just a few years after it was founded. In 1956 Podporoschje received city status.
