Nikolskoje ( Russian: Нико́льское ) is a city in the northwestern Russian Leningrad Oblast . It has 19,280 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located about 40 km southeast of the oblast capital Saint Petersburg on the Tosna , a left tributary of the Neva .

Nikolskoje belongs to the Tosno district .

history

Nikolskoje was founded on the instructions of Peter I in 1710 in connection with the construction of Saint Petersburg, when the mining of building materials (sand and stones) began in the area. Stonemasons from the areas of central Russia in particular have settled here. The village got its name after an icon of Nikolaus von Myra , for which the new settlers built a first wooden chapel from 1712 to 1718.

In 1877 a gunpowder factory was built.

During the Second World War , Nikolskoye was occupied by the German Wehrmacht during the Leningrad blockade .

In 1958 it was granted urban-type settlement status and in 1990 town charter.

Economy and Infrastructure

In Nikolskoje there are companies in the building materials industry (bricks, ceramic tiles and pipes, gravel), a chemical ( Sokol ) and a small machine factory.

The closest railway stations are west of Popovka in Krasny Bor on the route from Saint Petersburg to Moscow (route km 35) and north of Ivanovskaya near Otradnoye on the route towards Volkhov (route km 33). Both are about six kilometers from the city center of Nikolskoye.

The local road, which connects the trunk road M10 north of Tosno via Otradnoye with the trunk road M18 near Kirovsk , runs through Nikolskoje .
