geography
Novaya Ladoga is located at the mouth of the Volkhov River in Lake Ladoga and on the Ladoga Canal , about 140 km east of Saint Petersburg . The closest cities are Syasstroi and Volkhov , around 20 km away . Immediately south of the city is the settlement of Staraya Ladoga (translated Old Ladoga ).
history
A Russian Orthodox male monastery had stood on the site of Novaya Ladoga since the 15th century. In 1702, during the Great Northern War , Tsar Peter the Great had the monastery expanded into a fortress. At the same time, the construction of a shipyard began in their vicinity. In 1704, after this was completed, Novaya Ladoga received city rights. Peter also had the majority of the residents of Staraya Ladoga resettled here. A few years later, the construction of the Ladoga Canal began here. This and the new shipyard shaped the city and its economy in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
In the 1860s, a new canal was built parallel to the old Ladoga Canal along the shores of Lake Ladoga. After the laying of a railway line through the city of Volkhov in the late 19th century, the economic importance of the two canals declined significantly. In 1897 Novaya Ladoga had almost 4,000 inhabitants.
1941-1945, during the German war of aggression against the USSR , Novaya Ladoga was an important naval base. It was also from here that the emergency supply of the besieged Leningrad was coordinated via the frozen Lake Ladoga during the two-year blockade .
