location

The ruins of the former Niederungsburg lie on the right bank of the Aare in the municipality of Untersiggenthal. It is freely accessible and easily accessible on hiking trails. The ruins can be reached in five minutes on foot from the parking lot east of the Stilli Bridge.

investment

The remains of the wall of an enclosed residential tower have been preserved from the castle complex . In addition to the inclined tower, which was partially blown up in 1853, remains of residential and economic buildings as well as the surrounding wall can still be seen.

history

Around 1240 a bridge was built over the Aare in Freudenau and Freudenau Castle was built to protect it. At the bridge, numerous country roads crossed, which could be crossed with just one bridge shortly after the confluence of the Limmat , Reuss and Aare rivers. The ancient waterways from Bern , Lucerne and Zurich to Basel also passed the Freudenau. The many cellars in the castle suggest that this was a reloading point from river to land transport.

The decline of the Freudenau began already after 1300, as the bridge was replaced by a ferry a little further upstream.

A large part of the complex was destroyed on December 25, 1351, one day before the Battle of Dättwil , during a campaign by the people of Zurich. Other parts fell victim to a major fire shortly after 1400; the remaining buildings were abandoned and fell into disrepair over the centuries.
