The Kindhausen ruins are the remains of a hilltop castle from the Middle Ages in the municipality of Bergdietikon in the canton of Aargau .

history

House and round tower

Since there are no reliable written sources about the ruins, much remains unexplained. The builders were probably the lords of Schönenwerd, servants of the Counts of Kyburg and later the Habsburgs . On the occasion of an excavation in 1936, ceramic shards and a lance-shaped arrow iron were found. These finds suggest that it was built towards the end of the 12th century. In the middle of the 13th century the castle fell victim to a fire and was abandoned. A short time later the economic building was also given up and both buildings fell into disrepair.

Building

When the castle was excavated in 1936 by Reinhold Bosch , Albert Matter and Karl Heid, there were hardly any visible traces of the ruins. Some remains of the wall were excavated and preserved.

The castle was divided into two parts. On the southern hill, the highest point, a round tower was (probably a dungeon ) next to a square Palas . The high entrance to the tower with an inner diameter of 4.1 meters and a wall thickness of 1.2 meters was probably on the first floor and was connected to the hall with a wooden gallery. A farm building stood on the northern hilltop.
