Schafisheim Castle (Canton Aargau)
Schafisheim Castle

The Schafisheim Castle is a small, in late gothic built style castle in the village center Schafisheim in the Swiss canton of Aargau . This is the oldest castle building in Aargau, which was designed not as a fortification but as a residential building from the start.

history

The building was built a few years after the Battle of Sempach (1386) on behalf of the Lords of Baldegg, whose headquarters had been destroyed by the Confederates during the chaos of war . The exact year of construction is not known, the castle was first mentioned in documents in 1474. The building served as the residence of the owners of the Schafisheim jurisdiction within the subject area of the city of Bern .

In 1482, the troubled Baldegg family sold the castle and court rulership to the Hallwylers . After the Hallwylers' line of Schafisheim died out, the Bernese transferred the property to the brothers Samuel and Etienne Brutel in 1736, descendants of French Huguenots who had fled Montpellier . In 1802 the castle came into the possession of the community of Schafisheim. After several changes of ownership, the Baumann family bought the castle in 1845; their descendants still live in the building today.

building

The massive four-storey building with a pointed hipped roof is built in the late Gothic style. The oldest parts of the structure date from the early 15th century; the top floor consists of half-timbering . A round stair tower was added to the north side in 1605/06. In 1740 a three-story extension with a large cellar was built on the south side. An India factory was housed in the annex until 1821 ; the building was then converted into a residential building.

Next to the castle is a chapel , which was mentioned in 1360 as a branch of the Staufberg parish on the hill of the same name and was completely rebuilt in 1498. After the last private castle owner had used the chapel as a stable, the building was bought by the municipality in 1850 and restored.
