Trostburg (Canton of Aargau)
Trostburg

The Trostburg is a small castle in Teufenthal in the Swiss canton of Aargau . The medieval hill fort is located on a 40 meter high rock ledge above the village in a side valley of the Wyna .

history

The castle of the Lords of Trostburg, first mentioned in 1241, was built during the 12th century. A little later, a branch of the family split off and had Liebegg Castle built just under half a kilometer north . The Trostburgers were a ministerial family of the Counts of Kyburg and from 1264 put themselves in the service of the Habsburgs .

After the Trostburg family had died out, Trostburg came into the possession of the Lords of Reinach in 1346 , whose ancestral seat was a few kilometers further south in what is now the municipality of Burg . The Rinach established a small area of rule in which they exercised the lower jurisdiction . These included today's communities Teufenthal , Boniswil , Dürrenäsch , Hallwil , Leutwil and Zetzwil . After the conquest of western Aargau by the city of Bern in 1415, the lords of Reinach increasingly lost power.

In 1486 Hans von Hallwyl acquired the Trostburg. The Lords of Hallwyl then sold them to the city of Brugg in 1616 . However, Bern did not tolerate the increase in power of its subject city, took over the rights of rule and sold the Trostburg to private individuals. Around 1750 the castle was expanded into a residential palace that is still privately owned today. Trostburg is still privately owned today, with numerous changes of ownership.

building

Trostburg

The medieval castle has only been partially preserved. These include individual walls at the edge of the hill and on a molasse the ruins of the keep , which stands about seven feet high and its interior is filled with debris. An artificial moat separates the keep from the rest of the complex. At the southwest corner of the castle courtyard, at the leading edge of the terraced hill, stands the 1494 instead of the outer ward in late Gothic style built Hallwyl House. It was extensively renovated from 2000 by its current owner.
