Schlössli Bremgarten (Canton Aargau)
Bremgarten Castle

The Schlössli is a castle-like town house in Bremgarten in the canton of Aargau ( Switzerland ) that emerged from a medieval castle . It is built in a late Gothic - early Baroque transition style and is located on the northeast corner of the upper town, at the highest point of a hill towering steeply above the Reuss .

history

South facade with stair tower

The foundation of the building contains the remains of a high medieval keep , which dates back to before the city was founded and which belonged to the Vilingen settlement. "Turn ze Bremgarten" was first mentioned in a document in 1238, and from around 1300 the name "hus ze Bremgarten" also existed. The building consisted of two towers and served as the residence of Habsburg servants, who managed their masters' possessions in the Reuss valley from here.

From 1253 to around 1500 the castle was owned by the noble von Sengen family and then fell into the city. Hospital master Johann Balthasar Honegger acquired the building in 1641 for 2,700 guilders and had the younger of the two towers completely rebuilt and expanded. As part of this work, the Schlössli received its current appearance as a town house. The square tower, the older of the two towers, collapsed in 1802 and was never rebuilt. In the 18th and 19th centuries, numerous changes were made, especially inside the building. After the Schlössli belonged to the city again for a short time, it has been privately owned since 1882.

building

The building consists of two staggered structures of different sizes, to which two pentagonal towers with pointed helmets are attached. The main building has four floors and a gable roof . A smaller porch leans against the city wall on the east side. The interiors are partially decorated with painted panels depicting landscapes and hunting scenes. During the overall renovation in 1967/68, heraldic wall paintings dating from 1480 were discovered in the small hall on the second floor .
