Ruin Horen (Canton Aargau)
Ruin Horen

The ruins of Horen , often referred to as Rosenberg Castle on topographic maps , are the ruins of a hilltop castle above Küttigen in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It is located at an altitude of 450 meters on a foothill of the Kirchberg around 500 meters northwest of the church and belongs to the type of hill castles (Motte). ( Horen is a shortened variant of the word Hochrain .)

history

Neither the builder nor the exact year of construction of Horen Castle are known, but archaeological research has shown that the ruins were inhabited in the 12th century. At that time, the complex consisted of an oval ring with a gatehouse and a residential tower . The area was secured to the southeast by a neck ditch . The castle was given up again around 1200. The last owners were the Canons of Münster.

The correct name of the castle is not known. Its current name comes from the Middle Ages and was adopted by the surrounding farms. In the course of the 19th century the name Burg Rosenberg came up.

In 1960 the ruin was excavated and preserved. Previously, only the overgrown neck ditch and a small piece of wall had testified to the former existence of the castle. The masonry that was still preserved was renovated in 1989.
