Schöftland Castle

The Schöftland Castle is a late Gothic mansion in the village of Schöftland in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It is one of the cultural assets of national importance and is under cantonal monument protection .

history

Wolfgang von Mülinen (1609–1679), Lord of Schöftland, had Schöftland Castle built in 1660. A medieval tower used to stand in the same place, but it was destroyed in the Sempach War. In 1664 Mülinen left the castle to his son-in-law Johann Rudolf May (1619–1672). After the May sold the building in 1840, it was used as a cigar factory.

Schöftland Castle has been owned by the municipality since 1917, and the municipal administration is housed in the premises. In 2003, the Schloss-Scheune Nord was completely renovated and expanded to become a regional registry office. Between 2007 and 2009 the remaining outbuildings were also completely renovated.

architecture

The castle, which is more like a stately town house in the transition phase from Gothic to Baroque, is a three-storey rectangular building with a gable roof and round shape . A stair tower (Schneggen) with an angular pointed helmet is attached to the long rear side . A two-storey wing with a hip roof joins the main wing at right angles . The windows have jambs of limestone . A Mülinen / May alliance coat of arms is placed above the main entrance .
