The Hessian Department for Public Libraries
has been a department of the Wiesbaden State Library since 2005 and part of the RheinMain University of Applied Sciences since 2011 .
In addition to Wiesbaden, the Hessian specialist office also has a location in Kassel.

As a specialist agency for public libraries , it is a planning and advice center for all library specialist areas. Customers are Hessian municipal libraries and their owners, combined city and school libraries as well as schools that operate a library or want to set up a new one. Founded in 1929, the Hessische Fachstelle is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in Germany. Cross-border cooperation takes place regularly in the specialist conference of library departments in Germany.

The aim of the work is to further develop the library landscape in Hesse, to strengthen cooperation among the libraries (e.g. in the form of shared library portals such as the onleihe Verbund Hessen) and to compensate for structural differences through targeted project funding.

The Hessian Specialist Office is the point of contact for technical, conceptual and library policy issues and promotes the professional competence of library staff with a targeted further training program.

In order to support reading promotion for children, she cooperates actively with the Hessian Reading Promotion , an institution of the Hessian Ministry for Science and Art . In addition, the Hessian specialist office offers thematic media boxes and picture book cinemas on loan.

The school library specialist advice service is integrated into the Hessian specialist office. This helps schools to set up and redesign school libraries.
As part of the School Library Forum network, the Hessian specialist office offers not only competent advice but also active support for cooperation and an annual series of advanced training courses.
