Michael Stettler.

Bernhard Michael Stettler (born January 1, 1913 in Bern ; † June 18, 2003 in Steffisburg ) was a Swiss architect, art historian, museum director and writer .

Live and act

Michael Stettler grew up in Bern and studied architecture with Otto Rudolf Salvisberg at the ETH Zurich . After graduating in 1936, he received his doctorate in architectural history in 1940 and then took over the inventory of the art monuments in the canton of Aargau. From 1948 to 1961 he was director of the Bern Historical Museum . From 1961 to 1977 he was the first director involved in setting up the Abegg Foundation and its museum in Riggisberg.

In addition to his professional activity, Michael Stettler was a member of the commission for the Gottfried Keller Foundation from 1948 to 1980 (as president from 1948 to 1965) and from 1964 to 1976 at the commission of the Swiss National Museum , from 1970 to 1976 at the Swiss National Science Foundation . From 1960 to 1967 he was also President of the Pro Helvetia Cultural Foundation .

Literary work

Michael Stettler had been in contact with the poet Stefan George since 1931 and belonged to the George Circle until his death in 1933 . In the following years and decades, Stettler published several collections of his own poems (also in Bernese dialect), memories and testimonies in connection with George and his circle, but also many essays on art history, Bern history and on the artists, scientists and politicians with whom he worked was in contact.

A partial bibliography of his writings appeared in Stettler's work Aare, Bär and Sterne (285 numbers from the period 1939–1972). In 1983, on his 70th birthday, the commemorative publication Face to Face was published , and in 1997 his last volume of essays, Teachers and Friends .

family

Michael Stettler came from the Bernese patrician family Stettler , he was married to Barbara von Albertini (1920-2000). The marriage has four daughters. The family lived in the Ortbühl Campagne in Steffisburg.

Stettler was the nephew of Martha Stettler and Adèle von Tavel-Stettler, the wife of Rudolf von Tavels . Tavel was Stettler's godfather.

Stettler's estate is in the Burgerbibliothek Bern , the parts relating to George and the George district are in the Württemberg State Library in Stuttgart. The correspondence, reports and original drawings on the Nocera Rotunda in the Nocera Inferiore Diocesan Library.
