Hermann Eduard von Fischer (born October 26, 1926 in Wichtrach ; † March 26, 2015 in Bern ), authorized to reside in Bern, was a Swiss architect and art historian .

Live and act

Hermann von Fischer, son of the pastor Gottlieb Albert Fischer (1874–1926) and Anna Sara Bäschlin, grandson of the botanist Ludwig Fischer and great-grandson of the Basel architect Melchior Berri , obtained the high school diploma in 1945 at the Free High School in Bern . He completed his studies at the ETH Zurich in 1951 with a diploma in architecture . After completing his studies, he took on museum duties as assistant to Michael Stettler , the director of the Bernisches Historisches Museum , and was entrusted with the restoration and furnishing of Oberhofen Castle , and later appointed special expert of the cantonal art antiquities commission. When the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern created the cantonal preservation of monuments in 1959 , Hermann von Fischer became the first incumbent as a cantonal preservationist, who initially worked with modest means and saved buildings. He built up and expanded Bernese monument preservation until 1989.

He was married since 1953 to Margaretha Veronika Stettler (1928-2006), with whom he had a daughter and two sons. The two of them lived in Muri near Bern from 1959 .

As president or member of numerous commissions and foundations, Hermann von Fischer has rendered outstanding services to the preservation and care of cultural assets. From 1958 to 1964 and 1985 to 1996 he was a member of the Federal Commission for Monument Preservation, in 1965 he was one of the founders of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) , was a member of the supervisory commission of the Bernisches Historisches Museum, member of the Board of Trustees of the Hünegg Palaces , Jegenstorf , Landshut , Oberhofen and Spiez as well as the Rebhaus Wingreis and the Campagne Oberried . For many years he was chairman of the Ober-Gerwern Society , a member of the large and small citizens' council of the Bern civic community and president of the library commission of the Bern civic library .

The Swiss writer EY Meyer took Hermann von Fischer as a model for the “Monument Conservator Effinger” in his 1977 novel Die Rückfahrt .

Since the 1950s, he has been researching the work of the Bern artisan family Funk , especially the cabinet maker Mathäus Funk and his brother, the sculptor and carver Johann Friedrich Funk . In 2001, the University of Bern awarded him an honorary doctorate for his services to research into Bernese furniture .
