history

Stair area in the south wing. The two stairs lead to the roof and to the second floor.

The Freie Gymnasium Bern was founded as a Protestant school under the name Lerberschule in 1859 as a result of an attitude of the opposition, making it the third oldest grammar school in the canton of Bern. The founder, Theodor von Lerber , who ran the Pension School of the Lords von Lerber and Gerber in Bern together with Friedrich Gerber and came from a patrician family, feared the loss of the humanistic and religious educational content in the school policy of the then radical-liberal government. The school was renamed Free Gymnasium in 1892 when von Lerber turned away from it and forbade it to bear his name: he had fought in vain against the modernization of his school, which gave more space to mathematics and the natural sciences. In 1895 the first Matura was taken externally; Since 1909, the house Matura has been recognized by the cantons and the federal government. As early as 1901, the first girls entered the institution originally founded as a " boys' school "; but it was not until 1984 that the first woman was chosen as the main teacher. Since 1964, the Free Gymnasium Bern has received state contributions from the Canton of Bern, which are regulated in performance agreements. In 1972 the school moved from its location on Nägeligasse to its new building at its current location in Neufeld.

The Freie Gymnasium Bern does not see itself as a denominational school. In accordance with its school convention and model, the institution draws its value orientation from the Judeo-Christian tradition, but the school expressly allows other sources of individual values. Religious studies is a compulsory school subject and is effective for doctoral studies in grammar school. The student union is a member of the union of student organizations .

School offer

The Freie Gymnasium Bern introduces itself as an "eight-year long-term high school ": the four-year actual high school (school years 9 to 12) is preceded by the lower grammar school (school years 7 and 8) and the preparatory classes (school years 5 and 6). The school has its own curriculum that complies with the cantonal curricula .

Elementary school, preparatory classes

As a rule, a 5th and a 6th grade are held. The visit is intended for those students who are aiming for a high school career at an early age.

Lower secondary school

Analogous to name the gymnasium, the 7th and 8th grade Sexta and Quinta called (usually two parallel classes). There are no other branches at the Freie Gymnasium Bern. Anyone who completes the sixth grade with a secondary recommendation can enter the Freie Gymnasium without an examination. The certificate of the first semester is assessed as determining the location and not as a doctorate. In the Sexta you have half a year of computer science and six months of housekeeping. It is also compulsory for all Sexta students to attend Latin classes. In the quinta you can choose whether you want to do another year of Latin or a year of applied mathematics. Classes are not allowed to leave school during the lunch break.

high school

The grammar school begins in the canton of Bern with the 9th school year (Quarta) and ends with the 12th school year (Prima). In contrast to the other grammar schools, almost all pupils at the Freie Gymnasium Bern enter the fourth and not the tertiary (three parallel classes each). The Freie Gymnasium Bern can run a four-year course (also in the main subject). The house Matura has been recognized by the cantons and federal states since 1909.

partnership

Since 1988 there has been a cultural partnership between the Free Gymnasium and the Wilhelm-Löhe-Schule from Nuremberg (D); the theater groups from both schools regularly come to Bern and Franconia for a performance. On October 12, 2015, the then head of the Free Gymnasium in Bern, David Lingg, and the Wilhelm Löhe School, Michael Schopp, signed a cooperation agreement aimed at intensifying the cooperation between the two schools. In addition to the long-standing theater partnership, topic-oriented cooperation in the natural sciences and technology, student and teacher exchanges and joint information work are now to be considered.

Alumni

An association of alumni of the Freie Gymnasium Bern sees itself as an exchange and contact forum for graduates of the Freie Gymnasium Bern. It contributes to the ideal and financial prosperity of the school and annually supports high school graduation trips, school concerts, the school publication “Weg und Ziel”, career information days, infrastructure projects and makes small social contributions.
