Life

Georges Thormann was born as the son of Philipp Thormann , professor of criminal law and rector of the University of Bern . He studied architecture at the ETH Zurich and graduated with a diploma.

During his studies, Thormann became Gauführer Bern on the National Front in April 1935 . His frontist activities led to entries in the city police register. In 1937 members of the National Front in Bern smeared streets, sidewalks and house facades with communist slogans to warn of the "danger of a slow slide into the People's Front Republic" (Thormann). On the night of May 6th, 1937, the Berne National Front carried out another so-called «painting action». This time the Bern synagogue was smeared with the words "Juda vereke" (later a c was inserted) and a swastika. It is unclear whether Thormann remained a member until the National Front was dissolved in March 1940.

With his architectural community, he created the Murifeld development, which received an award at Expo 64 . He was instrumental in the renovation of the Burger home, the City and University Library , the Burger hospital and the casinos involved.

From 1946 on, Thormann was a member of various committees in the civic community of Bern . From 1956 and 1972 he was President of the Society at Pfistern . In 1968 Thormann was elected President of the Burgergemeinde with a very high number of votes, without addressing his frontist past. From 1969 to 1984 he presided over the civic community. In 1970 he led the "Osterbott", an annual meeting of the officials of the civic community and their affiliates, and in 1971 the "civic medal", which honored resigned officials for their voluntary work and other personalities for services to the cultural and scientific life of Bern be, a.
