Sam Sarr

Sam Sarr or Samuel Jonathan Okikiola Sarr / Samuel Jonathan Okeke Sarr ( MBE ) (born April 13, 1921 in Bathurst , † July 4, 2006 in Dakar ) was a Gambian diplomat and Gambian ombudsman in the West African state of Gambia until his death .

Life

The son of John Williamson Sarr and Constance Olivine Sarr, Sarr attended Methodist Boys' High School . From 1958 to 1969 he worked for the Gambia Oilseeds Marketing Board . From 1965 to 1970 he was District Sales Manager for Gambia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ghana. From 1967 to 1971 he held the position of President of the Gambia Tourist Association.

In 1971 he was appointed ambassador to Senegal by President Dawda Jawara , and the accreditation also applies to Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mali, Mauritania and Guinea-Bissau. In 1974 he was transferred as High Commissioner to Nigeria, where he was also accredited for Ghana, Cameroon, Gabon and Togo. At the same time he was Dean of the Diplomatic Corps. Sarr became High Commissioner in the United Kingdom in 1983 in London, where he was also accredited for Austria, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and was also Gambia's representative to the Holy See. He held this position until 1987.

From 1981 to 1983, Sarr was chairman of the West African Economic Community based in Nigeria.

In May 1999, Sarr was the first Ombudsman ( English Ombudsman ) of President Yahya Jammeh appointed. In 2006 Sarr died at the age of 88 while receiving medical treatment in the Senegalese capital Dakar.
