The Gambia Senior Secondary School (GSSS) (the former Gambia High School ) is a secondary school in the West African state of Gambia . It is located in the capital Banjul near Arch 22 on the corner of Banjul-Serekunda Highway and Box Bar Road . Lamin MB Jaite has been running the school since 2005 .

The Gambia High School in the 1960s

In 1876 the Wesleyan Church opened a school on Dobson Street . In 1898 it reopened as Methodist Boys High School . In 1915 the Girls High School was founded , which is now the Albion Lower Basic School . In 1959 the Methodist Boys High School and Girls High School were merged into the Gambia High School . At the same time, they moved into today's building complex at the entrance to the capital.

Since the reform of the Gambian school system in 1994, it has been the Gambia Senior Secondary School.

Data

A total of 30 classes, grades 10-12, are taught, these are divided into a morning and an afternoon shift. There are almost 900 students in one shift, so that a total of around 1,800 students attend the school. Around 40 percent of the students are girls.

  • Belinda Bidwell (1936-2007), the politician taught part-time at this school
  • Satang Jow (* 1943), the former minister, was the second female headmistress since it was founded.
  • Bai Modi Joof (1933–1993), lawyer
