history

The history of today's Casino Bern goes back to around 1890, when the first casino had to give way to the new Federal Palace. The area of the former Barfüsserkloster and the later university was chosen as the new area, which at that time belonged to the state (canton) and was vacated by the relocation of the university to Länggasse. However, city finances did not allow the construction of a city casino. The civic community of Bern offered support to the resident community in 1902. In 1903 a contract was signed between the state, the community and the civic council, according to which the civic community undertook to build the casino, which was to be used for "large festivities, musical performances and exhibitions".

The new casino was built between 1906 and 1908 by the architects Paul Lindt and Max Hofmann in the style of late baroque classicism with a striking hipped roof. After only two years of construction, the building was opened for business in 1909 with festivities. Right from the start, the casino also housed a restaurant and several smaller rooms for catering in addition to the cultural operations. The management of the restaurant was previously given to a tenant. The civic community has been running the casino independently since 2019.

The casino square in front of it is named after the Casino Bern .

Surname

Casino or casino (diminutive of Italian casa 'house' (from Latin casa 'little house, hut')) has the following meaning: building with club rooms, dining room for officers, for employees of companies, public operation for games of chance . The Italian term for 'Gesellschaftshaus' (for entertainment and games), previously 'Landsitz', came into German in the second half of the 18th century. Today the term is also used as a short form for casino. In order to simplify the confusing situation of the two Bern casinos, the civic community of Bern and Kursaal AG, operator of the casino, agreed to call the concert and culture house “Kulturcasino Bern” at the turn of the millennium. This enabled Kursaal AG to claim the name “ Grand Casino Bern ” for the casino. The landmarked lettering "Casino Bern" on the concert hall and the location on the Casinoplatz opposite the Casinoparking contributed to the fact that "Kulturcasino Bern" did not become a common name. The Burgergemeinde Bern therefore decided in 2017 to reintroduce the name “Casino Bern”.

Bern Symphony Orchestra

The Bern Symphony Orchestra is part of Konzert Theater Bern and does not belong to Casino Bern. However, Casino Bern is the home of the orchestra. It has its practice and storage rooms in the house and plays most of its concerts in the large hall of Casino Bern.
