List of cultural assets in Bern / Inner City (East)

The list of cultural assets in Bern / Inner City (East) contains all objects in the eastern part of District I, the Inner City of Bern , which, according to the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflicts , the federal law of June 20, 2014 on the Protection of cultural property in the event of armed conflict and the ordinance of October 29, 2014 on the protection of cultural property in the event of armed conflict .

Properties are recorded in the Green, Black and White Quarters (roughly corresponds to the area east of the Kornhausbrücke – Kirchenfeldbrücke line). Objects in categories A and B are completely included in the list, objects in category C are currently missing (as of January 1, 2018). Among other monuments objects are found that are "worthy of protection" listed in Bauinventar the city of Bern as well.

Many of the buildings in the eastern old town that are worthy of protection are currently listed in the building inventory only in summary form and without further details, which is why they are not yet taken into account here (2019).

Is considered the most representative patrician seat of Bern, today the meeting place of the municipal council and the official seat of the city president. The Erlacherhof is the only house in Bern's old town to have a courtyard of honor with a covered arcade in front of it.

Initially used as a coffee house with a dance and concert hall, from 1798 to 1900 as a theater, opera and concert stage, extensive renovations in 1904/05. The main front of the three-storey building is divided into nine axes and three almost imperceptibly protruding risalits .

It consists of Solothurn shell limestone , was probably designed by Niklaus Sprüngli and is considered the archetype of the Bern obelisk fountain . The slim, three-part obelisk is crowned by a gracefully silhouetted, draped urn with a ball point.

The fountain figure represents a herald or fast messenger who is on foot. From the older part, the three-storey courtyard facade with gable- topped cupola windows and the spiral staircase tower are present . The salon on the second floor has one of the most festive interiors of the Bernese Rococo with cube parquet, boiseries and a ceiling with flame-like radial fields.

The city's landmark and largest church building is considered to be one of the main works of the Swiss late Gothic . The foundation stone was laid in 1421, the construction work continued with interruptions until 1573. The construction of the church tower had to be interrupted in 1521 due to weak foundations at a height of around 55 m. It was not until three and a half centuries later that the building of the tower in neo-Gothic style was continued until it was completed in 1893 at 100.6 m.

Fountain erected in 1527, expanded in 1544 by an octagonal water basin and the fountain figure created by Hans Gieng . This depicts the Roman- clad biblical hero Samson grabbing a lion by the mouth to tear it apart (compare Book of Judges 14: 6). He is armed with the jaws of a donkey and carries the tools of a butcher.

Originally built under Ludwig Emanuel Zehender from 1750 to 1755 as "Ankenwaag" (official wine cellar and market hall) and converted from 1787 to 1794 into Switzerland's first profane library with its own building. From 1860 to 1863 Gottlieb Hebler added an eastern annex, 1904/05 by Eduard von Rodt to include a western annex.

Striking baroque building next to the cathedral. Originally built around 1256 as a Teutonic Order House (new building in 1435). After the order was expelled in 1485, it was converted into a secular canon monastery. The current building was built between 1745 and 1748 according to plans by Johann Friedrich Funk and has served the cantonal administration since 1832.

The building, built between 1733 and 1735 by Albrecht Stürler on behalf of Beat von Tscharner, is one of the most representative baroque buildings in Bern; since 1928 it has been the seat of the financial administration of the Canton of Bern. The four floors are separated by striking cornices and framed by banded corner pilasters and a cornice; the middle three of the seven axes are designed as a risalit . The triangular gable contains a Tscharner coat of arms supported by griffins .

Hans Hiltbrand from Schaffhausen created the fountain in 1535. The associated trough was added in 1542 and replaced in 1889 by the present one. The fountain figure is a standing bear with a helmet and two swords in its belt. The right paw holds a banner, the left a shield. The banner and shield show a golden lion on a red background, the Zähringer identification mark .
