Rudolf Mumprecht

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rudolf Mumprecht (born January 1, 1918 in Basel ; † July 25, 2019 in Bern ) was a Swiss draftsman and painter .

Life

Mumprecht was born in Basel and grew up in Bern . His talent for drawing showed up early on, but it was only during his apprenticeship as a cartographer, which he completed in 1938 as a draftsman-lithographer, that he dealt in depth with artistic forms of design. During his active service in World War II , he continued to develop his artistic skills on an autodidactic basis. Objective drawings were created, mostly landscapes and portraits.

To escape the narrowness of Bern and Switzerland, Mumprecht made several trips to different countries after the end of the war. From 1949 to 1954 he lived in Paris, where mainly lithographs and aquatint sheets were made. During a further stay in Paris-Versailles between 1960 and 1964, he created the first large-format pictures.

Since his return to Switzerland in 1964, Mumprecht lived and worked in Köniz and since 1986 also in Brione sopra Minusio . He died on July 25, 2019 in the “Burgerspittel Viererfeld” in Bern.

Mumprecht's estate is in the Burger Library in Bern .

Create

With his first stay in Paris, a long period of searching and experimentation began, which led Mumprecht more and more to abstraction. The informal painting and the related liberation of the line established the connection to the international development: the works created from 1954 fit seamlessly into the contemporary art movements of Tachism and abstract expressionism . Although he belonged to the avant-garde with his gestural work, he did not join any of these movements, but remained a conscious loner.

Around 1970, after he had tried out the possibilities of gestural painting that were of interest to him, Mumprecht went one step further. With the script and language images that have been created since then, the peinture d`écriture , the artist achieved an independent artistic expression that was largely independent of contemporary trends and styles. In their multilingualism, his pictures cross cultural borders. The written statement becomes the core of the work of art.
