Niklaus Sprüngli
Niklaus Sprüngli (baptized September 6, 1725 in St. Stephan BE ; † December 8, 1802 in Bern ) was a Swiss architect and draftsman .
Life
Sprüngli was the son of pastor Samuel Sprüngli (1688–1771) and Anna Maria Heggi. His first marriage was to Judith Elisabeth Steck (1727–1769) and his second marriage to Elisabeth Tschiffeli (1733–1802), a sister of Johann Rudolf Tschiffeli . Niklaus Sprüngli began an apprenticeship with the minster foreman Johann Jakob Jenner in 1741 and stayed in Paris from 1746 to 1755 , where he said he continued his education with Jacques-François Blondel and in 1754 won a medal at the Prix de Rome academy competition. Together with the Franco-Italian fireworks and stage architect Giovanni Niccolò Servandoni (1695–1766) he traveled to London and to Dresden, Berlin and Potsdam. 1756 he had possibly settled in Bern, where he projects for the armory worked out and the Stalden refurbishment, which were not realized. After 1757, the Bernese authorities commissioned him with numerous new buildings and renovations such as churches, parsonages, bailiffs' seats , beneficiaries , some bridges and water protection structures throughout the city and republic of Bern . In 1764 Sprüngli held the position of builder von Burgern in the external estate . Between 1766 and 1767 the Hauptwache was built in Bern and the Hôtel de Musique , two of his main works, from 1767 to 1770 . In 1770 the lot determined him to be the master stone worker of the outer hut. As a master stoneworker, he repaired and planned state buildings from 1770. The library gallery, which was demolished in 1909, was built between 1773 and 1775. In 1796 he was elected master craftsman.
A garden design from around 1774 for Ebenrain Castle near Sissach and the two pavilions of the Kleehof near Kirchberg dating from around 1765 have been secured as buildings for private clients . During his lifetime he was already listed in the “History of the best artists in Switzerland” by Johann Caspar Füssli (1706–1782). Sprüngli designed several architectural fantasies and, in his old age, numerous landscape vedutas, some of which appeared in print. The Bernese architect and monument conservator Bernhard Furrer described Niklaus Sprüngli and Albrecht Stürler as the two most important Bernese architects of the late baroque .
