St. Stephan is a municipality in the Obersimmental-Saanen administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland .
geography
St. Stephan is located in the Bernese Oberland in the Upper Simmental between Zweisimmen and the Lenk . The community extends to the Albristhorn ( 2762 m above sea level ). The neighboring communities starting from the north in a clockwise direction are Zweisimmen, Diemtigen , Adelboden , Lenk and Saanen .
The community consists of the Bäuerten Ried , Häuser , Grodey , Matten , Fermel , Obersteg and Zu Hähligen . There is no place called St. Stephan.
politics
St. Stephan is a community of residents without a civil parish . In addition, there is an evangelical reformed parish . Albin Buchs has been the community president of the community since January 1, 2014 (as of January 2018).
The voting shares of the parties on the occasion of the 2015 National Council election were: SVP 69.0%, EDU 8.8%, BDP 5.1%, FDP 4.1%, SP 4.0%, glp 3.2%, GPS 2.2 %, EVP 1.5%, CVP 0.3%.
Surname
The name of the parish goes back to Saint Stephen, patron of the parish church. Legend has it that a soldier of the Theban Legion named Stephanus hid in the Albristgraben above the Färmeltal and lived there as a hermit.
Airfield
In the valley floor is the former St. Stephan airfield with hard surface. A maintenance company takes care of the maintenance of private aircraft. The airfield was built for the Swiss Air Force ; today it is mainly used for civilian purposes. Among other things by a private hunter club, which owns a Hawker Hunter of the former Fliegerstaffel 15, which has been transformed into a papyrus hunter.
A hunter festival has been taking place on the airfield since 2000.
